I was invited to exhibit in the 2010 PIPE-UP
group show put on at 'PAPER HORSE'STUDIO,
art on skate board decks.

Piece was a mix of ink and posca.
cleared with auto acrylic. Happy to say
it sold within 30mins of open.
Really appreciate the interest! It was an awesome canvas and a solid
opportunity to show case with other international and local talent.

I have Done a few step by step screen
grabs of my work as i go on the last few covers.
I do this purely cause i like looking at it in others work, sometimes the sketch contains more soul.

'STATE OF THE ART'

exciting cover for me as it was the first one i have had soul direction on, They guys had other ideas but i pitched this and it flew;)

PENCILS
TONES(i worked in grey to get the right tonality+saves time on thinking.)
COLOUR overlays and underlays.
I try to keep a traditional paint look.
And let the pencils come through...

We did 2 covers for SOTA. I like the other but works more as a poster in it's portrait format.
It is the lowrider summer feel!this image hasn't made it to print.On ice
My personal fav bits are the Jordan 4's ( i had some, were my favs) the candy apple green speedboat metalic;)

I'm working up my DH helmet a TLD D2.
Prepared by Grant Allen,Grant has done a nice white with subtle blue pearl!
I was mapping out the gear fro him to airbrush and got a bit carried away. He is now saying i should strip it back so he can airbrush this same image.
Not sure about that yet,Although it would be insanely good to see done properlly, I have sunk a few hrs in, I actually don't mind the marker feel hmmm...can't wait to use it again, been way to long wearing my mates Gyro helmet that looks like a grey tennis ball!

Just sharing a few new bits n pieces.
I have been making an effort to do a bit more each morning,All in the one spot, I have an aversion to sketchbooks as I feel every page should be rad, 'all killah no fillah' as 1 of my best mates proclaims, but am trying to let go. I worry about the trees to much;)

last year I went out with VANS one of Adelaides most Prolific Graph writers.
I have grown up around paint and Writers and have dipped in and out. One thing I can say, they Cans they make these days, are so good, colourwise and usability! I had a shot here at a Character on the fly! I said" man I don't have an idea, i didn't bring any sketch book,paper? Vans(zen)"go man sketch it on the wall!" It ended up being a bit bigger than i planed , and is unfinished as my plan was for it to be a robot Geisha! I wish there was a lot more hrs in the day! I would be keen to do a heap more characters. I was meant to re-vistit the wall around christmas, but had broken my collar bone, And was avoiding ladders;) Anyway, it's work in prog:

NEAR THE END OF LAST YEAR SUFFA AND I DISCUSSED MAKING A CLIP FOR 'TLYB'
This would be my 3rd time to Direct,I Never angled to be a director, but it has grown on me. 'Was on the tools as well making it an extra challenge, so many directions, lists, schedules, feedback at 3-4 am... long blacks!!!

AS IS THE NORM, WE ENDED UP WITH VERY VERY LITTLE TIME TO ORCHESTRATE THIS.
BASICALLY MY PRODUCER AND I CAME UP WITH A CONCEPT, SCRIPT AND CHARACTER DESIGNS 1ST.
LEAVING AROUND 4-5 WEEKS TO ANIMATE A 4 MINUTE SONG;)(yep you read right). AS YOU WOULD IMAGINE THERE WAS VERY LITTLE SLEEP AND THE ANIMATION WAS DESIGNED TO BE LIMITED IN A HOKEY and an ode to'HANNAH BARBARA'. KEEPING SOME STYLE,WHILST BEING JUST CONTAINABLE. I EMPLOYED AROUND 20 ANIMATORS AND ILLUSTRATOR TO PITCH IN, EACH DOING SMALL ELEMENTS. THIS 18-20 DAY THING AGAIN NEARLY KILLED ME.TO BE HONEST I HAVE NOT WATCHED THE CLIP SINCE UNTIL NOW.IT'S AIGHT CONCIDERING ENJOY
SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THE ANIMATORS AN ILLUSTRATORS, AND THE COMPOSITOR, THE WIZARD...YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE. i'M HAPPY TO CREDIT IF YOU FEEL OK WITH A MILDLY RUSHED PRODUCT:)(UNDERSTATEMENT)The guys love this, and it is a laugh, which was our intention so job well done

Murdoch Portrait

I had an amazing opportunity mid last year.I am friends with a Woman who until
very recently was P.A to the Murdoch family. She has had a big impact on the lives
of them and their children.She commissioned me to paint the girls as a Christmas gift
for
Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendy.
The Girls are cute as anyway,the job was not huge to make them look good.
I got onto that pretty quick;)I documented the progress here: Hope you like
Mediums BLACK&WHITE INK,B&W CHARCOAL(yes there is white charcoal.)
PASTEL,LIQUID PAPER...;)
This now resides in the 5th Ave in New York.I am told it is a featured in the
standard 'house tour' with appropriate enthusiasm;) I'm moved that they
resonate with it!I was focused, but needed to inject enough of myself into it
for me to be happy as well. I think it turned out alright,'wouldn't do to much different.

John Engelhardt has pursued his career in illustration and animation since the early 1990s, working for major players such as Walt Disney Australia, Anifex and The People’s Republic of Animation.
John has worked extensively with the Hilltop Hoods in creating their trademark conceptual art. In 2006 John directed and undertook production design for the Hoods’ music video Clown Prince. The video was a finalist in the Belowground Music Video Awards, made Official Selection at the Cyprus International Film Festival, the SoundKilda Music Video Festival, the Indie Music Video Festival (CAN/USA) and won Best Music Video at the SA Short Screen Awards.
In 2007 John gained an ARIA nomination for best cover art for the Hilltop Hoods’ Restrung album.
On top of a string of awards in art direction, production design and illustration, John was also nominated for an AGDA Pinnacle Award for his series of illustrations for Mollydooker wine labels. He was also chosen by the Australian Graphic Design Association to showcase Adelaide illustration in the form of a social comment that reflected the misguided views of the eastern states.
Most recently, John was commissioned by the Hilltop Hoods to create 60 minutes of digitally illustrated and animated backgrounds that are currently screening onstage with the Hoods during their international State of the Art tour. John’s work as director, lead illustrator and animator has received rave reviews and incredible levels of audience appreciation.
John will now return to the more tactile media of ink and paint, and later in the year will deliver his most exciting commission yet - for one of the world’s most recognized heads of business in New York.
